Resume Optimization: Fix the Resume Before You Tailor It
A resume that is weak on its own will be weak for every job. The Resume Health Check looks at the document itself, across seven dimensions, before any job is involved.

Two different questions
Optimising a resume answers two separate questions. First: is this a strong resume? Second: is it right for this job? Mixing them is why people keep rewriting and never finish. Fix the first once, then tailor for the second each time you apply.
The Resume Health Check is about the first question. It never looks at a job. Its seventh dimension, Resume Role Alignment, asks whether the resume is coherent about who you are; it is explicitly not a job match.
The seven dimensions
Each dimension is built from weighted components, and a dimension that cannot be assessed says so instead of showing a made-up number.
- ATS Compatibility: Can a machine read this document completely and reliably?
- Content Strength: Do the bullets read like specific, action-led accomplishments?
- Achievement Evidence: Do the bullets prove outcomes, and how well?
- Skills Coverage: Are the listed skills real, varied and backed by the experience section?
- Structure & Completeness: Is every part of the resume present, complete and consistent?
- Readability: Is the text easy to scan and read?
- Resume Role Alignment: Does the resume position the candidate coherently (title, summary, skills, experience)? This is not a job match.
What it reads in your bullets
The Health Check classifies every bullet by what it actually proves, because this is where most resumes lose readers:
- A quantified outcome: a measured change, such as "reduced churn by 18%".
- A qualitative result: a stated change with no figure, such as "improved the onboarding experience".
- Scope only: a size, not a result, such as "managed 5 stores".
- Responsibility only: a duty with no result, such as "responsible for weekly reviews".
- Unsupported: a claim with nothing behind it, such as "dynamic, results-driven professional".
Before Responsible for weekly reporting to the sales team.
After Replaced a manual weekly sales report with an automated one, saving the team a recurring half-day of copying figures.
Use a result you can stand behind. If you do not have a figure, a clearly stated qualitative result is better than an invented number.
A sensible order of work
- Make it readable by machines. Fix anything that stops the text being extracted cleanly. See the ATS compatibility guide.
- Strengthen the bullets. Start with the classification above. Raise responsibility-only bullets into results where the result is real.
- Check the structure. Make sure every section is present, complete and consistent.
- Then tailor. Only now adapt the resume to a particular job.
What this cannot do
- The Health Check runs inside the signed-in Resume Studio, not on this page.
- It cannot verify that the experience you wrote is true.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the Health Check the same as the job match?
- No. The Health Check evaluates the resume on its own. The match compares it with one job description.
- Does a higher health score guarantee interviews?
- No. It measures the document’s quality, not an employer’s decision.
- Is it free?
- A basic seven-dimension diagnostic is included on the free plan. Check the plans on the home page for the current list.
